I live in Burnaby, BC.
Burnaby politics has long been controlled by the left leanings of a union funded (and dominated) City Council run for some time by Derek Corrigan, the Mayor.
His civic ‘party’ is funded in large part by the BC Government Employees Union and other unions. It is an arm of the dysfunctional, socialist NDP party, the opposition in the legislature opposing the ruling Liberal party. The Liberal party enjoys a double digit lead over the NDP Opposition.
As the election is beginning to elect a new provincial government, I’m reminded of the ridiculousness of the policies of those elected to serve Burnaby. Burnaby elected officials are not up for election but its policies affects those running in the city for provincial representation.
Burnaby is a sea of NDP/Union friendly, others-go-home aficionados. Our MP’s are NDP, Corrigan stands to win an MLA seat and the Mayor is NDP in a civic milieu (Metro Vancouver) that looks upon Burnaby as a political oddity.
Corrigan’s wife, Kathy Corrigan, a former School Board trustee, is running for Member of the Legislative Assembly for the NDP. She opposes the development of a provincial remand center in Burnaby on grounds that have housed a youth detention facility for 40 years. It’s inappropriate she says to have criminals close to the populous. NIMBYism (not in my back yard) at its worst. To illustrate her point she fills a community center with people supporting her views paid for and filled by unionists and NDP supporters. The rhetoric lifts the biased crowd is newsworthy and the province backs out of the multimillion dollar development project.
The Mayor being equally complicit in controlling the outcome of issues to favour the NDP will do anything to oppose the governing Liberal party. He recently came out against twinning the Port Mann Bridge. This project worth $2.3 Billion would have feeder lanes increased in Burnaby – no way says the Mayor. Is there any other reason other than to oppose the Liberals because I don’t get it!
Now why am I upset about this?
Imagine the Mayor’s council all belonging to his party (with no accountability and opposition), the School Board dominated by the same party, the federal elected officials belong to the NDP (the same party) and now the province electing an NDP candidate who happens to be the Mayor’s wife. Cronyism, nepotism, favoritism and lots of other –isms seem to be at play. Here is the kicker, all 3 levels of government will be dominated by a party that will never be in power except civically. Not being in power provides them with the unique ability to be critical of everything without the responsibility that goes with it.
…that’s just my opinion!
